Dear Parents,
It has been a great start to the new 2015-2016 school year. All classes have been busy completing DRA tests, spelling inventory tests for word study, math pre-tests, and launching all of our subjects, as well as our specials, have created a busy start to the year. The thing is that it is always this busy in grade 5.
Each month we will be reporting on events that have happened over the month as well as keeping you informed when important dates are approaching. All subject areas will be reported on, to keep you all in touch with what we are learning in Grade 5.
Thank you again for your initial support in coming to the curriculum coffee, and we look forward to a great learning year at RIS.
READING
In Readers Workshop we have started with recording our reading logs and writing a response to our reading each and every night.
Students have been learning about choosing books that are just right for them. In order for the students to progress, the students need to be reading books that are not too easy and not too hard.
Please ask you child at night what they have been reading. If possible ask them questions about the book. Maybe at night ask your child if you could listen to them read, or taking turns to read.
MATHEMATICS
In math, students have started with learning new strategies when multiplying 2 digit numbers. Students have found new ways other than the old algorithm technique to solve multiplication problems.
Students have created story problems as well as explained in their own words how to solve it efficiently. Students have also been learning how to break apart numbers so they can find those “friendly” numbers that are easier to solve in their mind without putting pen to paper.
SCIENCE
In science, students have started a chemistry unit of study called Mixtures and solutions with a complete hands on approach to each and every lesson.
Students have revisited the steps of writing out a lab following the science lab report checklist.
Expectations that are linked to the checklist glued inside the science journal for each particular section are to be followed for every lesson. Neatness, a clear and concise result section, and a reflection that can extend to the next investigation are areas that each student needs to work on.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In social studies, we have identified the 5 themes of geography, and now are practicing the skills that are associated with the study of geography.
We will be integrating research from the library as well as building in a technology component that showcases the student’s learning. We have started looking at location and the skills of finding longitude and latitude.
Stay tuned for the project to appear in your child’s blog page shortly.
WRITING
Writers’ workshop has started with each student writing their own personal narratives. We are just writing all of our thoughts down on paper at the moment, but soon each student will choose one of their journal entries to develop further into a piece that they will publish. We have deconstructed a text to look at every sentence from an example paper. After that we looked at writing similes and made a class song titled "Everything at Once." Please look at our finished project on our google classroom site.
We will be studying leads, endings, how to write dialogue, how to punctuate a sentence, how to write in detail by zooming in on an event, and finally how to write with more details by using metaphors and adjectives.
We all hope that all parents can get involved with their child’s learning at home and at school when we celebrate our learning accomplishments.
Sincerely,
Grade 5 Team

Grade 5 recommended Book reading list
Talking to parents over the years I have had many requests for a recommended book list. Please click on the link below to get to this webpage that has an entire list of great books that are appropriate for grade 5 students. I have some of the books in our class library and in the school library. The website gives a brief summary about what the book is about. This is a helpful website for parents, students, and teachers alike. Also there is a list of books that I have scanned into documents below that show the new additions to our school library that are suitable for grade 5 readers. Look out for the highlighted titles and there are some pages where the whole page is recommended.
Happy reading,
Mr. Mitch
